Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer Guidelines provides guidance on the role of Named Animal Care and Welfare Officers (NACWOs), individuals with responsibility for overseeing the welfare and care of laboratory animals within an establishment, as defined by the UK Animal (scientific Procedures) Act (A(SP)A).
The document provides information on a NACWOs role, the knowledge, competencies and skills required, their responsibilities, and training requirements.
This guidance includes the enhanced role and responsibilities of NACWOs under A(SP)A following implementation of the European Union animal welfare Directive 2010/63/EU.
It was developed by the Institute of Animal Technology, with copyright being retained by that organisation.
This guidance will be of benefit to individuals in the UK employed as NACWOs. It will also be of benefit to laboratory animal technologists elsewhere in the world with responsibility for overseeing the welfare and care of laboratory animals within their Institution.
